Remembering Merlin: A Life of Courage and Hope | LYNAYC

privilege of supporting matters — and Merlin Shamly’s

story is one we will always remember.

Merlin was a 19-year-old BSc Nursing student with dreams

of completing her education, becoming a nurse, and building a better

future for herself and her family.

Raised by her widowed mother, Merlin understood both hardship and

perseverance from a young age. Despite the challenges her family faced,

she continued pursuing an education centered around caring for others.

An Unexpected Battle

Merlin’s life changed when she faced

recurrent osteosarcoma of the right femur, a form of

bone cancer.

As part of her treatment, she underwent an

above-knee amputation in January 2024 and continued

fighting through further medical treatment.

For Merlin and her mother, the emotional weight of her illness was

accompanied by another serious challenge: the financial cost of

continuing her medical care.

With limited financial resources, her family could not carry the cost

of treatment alone.

learned about Merlin’s situation, we stepped forward to help.

For seven months, support was provided toward Merlin’s

treatment as she and her mother faced an extraordinarily difficult

chapter of their lives.

Our role was not simply about financial assistance.

It was about making sure a young woman and her mother knew that they

were not facing this journey entirely alone.

Remembering Merlin

In April 2024, Merlin passed away.

Her passing brought profound sadness to her family and to those who

had come to know her story.

Merlin did not get the opportunity to finish the nursing education

she had worked toward or live the future she had imagined.

But the value of her life cannot be measured by the milestones she

did not have the opportunity to reach.

 

Every person deserves to be cared for, supported and remembered —

especially during life’s most difficult moments.

 

Our Commitment Continued

Our responsibility to Merlin’s family did not end with her passing.

For an additional three months, support continued for

Merlin’s mother as she faced the unimaginable grief of losing her daughter.

The assistance helped ease some of the financial burden left behind,

allowing her family to grieve without having to carry the same immediate

financial pressure alone.

Why Merlin’s Story Matters

Charity is sometimes associated with stories of recovery, graduation,

achievement and new beginnings.

Those stories are important. But they are not the only stories that matter.

Sometimes helping means walking alongside someone through circumstances

we cannot change.

Sometimes impact means providing dignity, compassion and practical support

during someone’s most difficult days.

Merlin’s story reminds us why this work matters.

Not every person we support will experience the outcome we desperately

hope for. But every person deserves compassion. Every family deserves

support. And every life has value.

 

We continue to carry Merlin’s memory with us — a young woman who

faced an unimaginable battle with courage, and a family we were

honoured to stand beside.
