The COVID-19 pandemic knew no borders.

Across Sri Lanka, lockdowns and disruptions to everyday life left

families facing lost income, financial uncertainty, and difficulty

accessing basic necessities.

Students faced challenges of their own as the pandemic disrupted

education and made access to learning resources more difficult.

During this challenging period,

Love Your Neighbours As Yourself Charity (LYNAYC)

extended a helping hand beyond borders — supporting families and

students in Sri Lanka through a trusted local church partnership.

When the Pandemic Reached Every Community

COVID-19 affected communities around the world in different ways,

but many families faced a common challenge: uncertainty.

Lockdowns affected employment and income, placing additional pressure

on households already working hard to meet their everyday needs.

For families experiencing financial hardship, access to basic

provisions became increasingly important.

At the same time, students were trying to continue their education

through unprecedented disruption.

A crisis may cross borders, but so can compassion.

Reaching Families Through a Local Church Partnership

Providing meaningful assistance from another country requires

something essential: trusted people within the local community.

LYNAYC worked through a

local church partnership in Sri Lanka

to help reach people experiencing hardship during the pandemic.

Working with a local partner helped connect assistance with

families and students within the community who needed support.

This community-based approach reflects an important part of our work:

combining the generosity of supporters with the knowledge and

relationships of trusted people on the ground.

Providing Essential Provisions to Families

For families facing reduced income and pandemic-related hardship,

everyday necessities could become increasingly difficult to afford.

As part of the Sri Lanka initiative,

essential provisions were distributed to families in need.

The assistance was practical and immediate — helping families

navigate a period when even ordinary household needs could become

a significant financial challenge.

In the middle of a global crisis, these provisions represented

something simple but important:

a community knowing that it had not been forgotten.

Helping Students Continue Learning

Families were not the only focus of the initiative.

Education was deeply disrupted during the pandemic, creating

additional challenges for students trying to continue learning.

LYNAYC therefore also helped provide

school supplies and educational materials

to students in Sri Lanka.

These resources included dictionaries and other

educational materials intended to support students as they continued

their studies during a difficult and uncertain period.

Supporting a child during a crisis means caring not only about

today’s needs, but also about tomorrow’s opportunities.

Why Education Still Matters During a Crisis

When families face an emergency, immediate necessities naturally

become the priority.

Food, household provisions, health, and financial survival all

demand attention.

But children’s education continues to matter.

Providing educational materials helps students maintain a connection

to learning even when the circumstances surrounding them are uncertain.

By supporting both families and students, this initiative addressed

immediate needs while also recognizing the importance of protecting

children’s opportunities for the future.

Compassion Beyond Borders

Love Your Neighbours began with a simple principle:

when we encounter genuine need and have the ability to help,

geography should not determine whether we respond.

The families and students supported through this initiative were

in Sri Lanka, but distance did not make their struggles less important.

Through local partnerships, compassion can travel across cities,

countries, and continents.

It can become food and essential provisions for a family.

It can become a dictionary or educational resource in the hands

of a student.

And it can become reassurance that even during an extraordinary

global crisis, someone cares.

No Community Is Too Far to Matter

The assistance provided in Sri Lanka was a modest response to a

crisis affecting millions of people.

But meaningful impact does not always begin with something large.

It begins when people notice a need and choose to respond.

No community is too far to matter, and no act of compassion

is too small to make a difference.
